Introduction
The third working phase IEA-EBC Annex 85 Online Workshop was held on April 21st, 2022 at Beijing, using ZOOM meeting room. The meeting was opened by Associate professor Xiaoyun Xie. The topic of the workshop is IEC water chiller and IEC air cooler performance, different process comparison and the indicators to identify the performance of IEC system. Five research presentation were given by participants. And subtask leaders also gave presentations to introduce the preliminary progress of each subtask. Representatives from seven participating countries attended the meeting.

Main Content of the workshop (21st April 2022, UTC: 11:00~15:00)

  • Welcome and introduction (all participants, 15 mins, 11:00~11:15)
  • Research presentation about performance of different IEC water chiller and IEC air cooler system. (5 presentations, 40 mins for each, 11:15~14:40)
    •  Performance of an IEC air cooler (Adrien POURBAIX, 15 mins+25mins, 11:15~11:55)

The presentation is about the measurement and calculation of the real performance of two IEC-A system in Belgium.

  • Modelling of an indirect evaporative air-cooling system. (Jean Lebrun, 15min+25min, 11:55~12:35)

Give a typical running condition of an IEC air cooling system, continuation of the work already presented. The presentation shows two heat exchangers and two adiabatic humidifiers, different “modes” of use, and new approximations introduced into each heat exchanger simulation model.

  • Wettability of IEC surfaces. (Roberta Caruana, 15 mins+25mins, 12:35~13:15)

Introduce the wettability experiment of three different material, HPHI, STD, and AL. Higher plates wettability significantly enhances the IEC performance, and it is necessary to increase the surface wettability factor.

  • Evaluation of the performance of an IEC cooling water system. (Alanis Zeoli, 15 mins+25mins, 13:15~13:55)

Analyze the natural cooling time of IEC cooling water system and compare the consumption of the regular cooling tower and the indirect evaporative chiller.

  • Comparison of IEC air cooler system and IEC water chiller system. (Xiaoyun Xie, 15 mins+25mins, 13:55~14:35)

Through simulation and example analysis, to remove the same indoor sensible heat, if outdoor air temperature is higher than indoor air temperature, always it is better to use IEC water chiller system, with lower input heat transfer area and system electricity consumption.

  • Brief progress of subtasks from subtask leaders, includes discussion (Subtask leaders, 20mins,14:35~14:55)
    • Subtask A (Alireza Afshari)

The subtask leader Alireza Afshari gave an overview research plan of subtask A and introduced article: Approach integrating Indirect Evaporative Cooling System in building applications.

  • Subtask B (Stefano De Antonellis)

The subtask leader Stefano De Antonellis gave the research plan of subtask B, introduced performance and cost analysis of IEC/DEC technologies.

  • Subtask C (Xiaoyun Xie)

The subtask leader Xiaoyun Xie introduced the main research content of subtask C, introduced some interested topics and publications according to workshop presentations.

  • Subtask D (Vincent lemort)

The subtask leader Vincent lemort gave the research plan of subtask D, introduced some contents of subtask report.

  • Summary and adjournment (all participants, 14:55~15:00)
